How Do Online Construction Management Programs Work?

Online construction management programs work by allowing students to access college courses over the Internet at their home computers or any other computer to which they have regular access. Generally, all online degree programs are designed to help students further their education at a distance when taking courses in a traditional classroom setting is either not practical or impossible due to work or other obligations. Online construction management programs let students expand their education at a time and from a location that is more convenient for the busy student.

Like a traditional construction management student taking classes at a brick-and-mortar campus, online construction management students take courses in key areas such as site construction, project management, building codes and standards and legal documents and contracts. However, the format of delivery is different. Where traditional students learn primarily from a professor’s in-person classroom lecture, online students access the university’s online learning software program to learn from electronic lesson materials, online audio/video recordings and from other online resources provided by professors that students may never meet in person. Online construction management students also often use traditional textbooks to supplement online reading materials.

How your construction management program works depends largely on the college or university in which you choose to enroll. For example, in ITT Tech’s online construction management program, courses contain anywhere from 15 to 25 students and are taught over a six or 12-week period. Also, the activities and assignments involved in each course must be completed in a set amount of time and support materials for each course are sent to the student. All good online construction programs allow students to communicate with their professor and with their fellow students through e-mail, chat and discussion boards.

Professors post assignments on your course’s site and students are typically given a time-range in which to complete them rather than a rigid due date. Because of the online format, turning something in at night or on a weekend is a possibility, but students still must be able to keep on top of their tasks, or they will fall behind as more assignments stack up. Tests and quizzes are also conducted online. Very seldom will online construction management students need to set foot on a campus.

Skittish because it all sounds too complicated? Don’t be. Most colleges with online programs offer a pre-course or online tutorial introducing students to the online learning environment.
